Hunting and Gathering

I just had lunch with two stunning women who let me know about a disturbing new trend.  They said that guys just don't make the first move anymore.  Apparently it's common now for guys to shuffle their feet and sort of act like a friend and wait for the woman to make the move.  And then when she does, they act freaked out, like Bambi in the headlights.  Bambi was a male deer, remember?  Now, I understand that we've all come a long way, baby....and there's absolutely NOTHING wrong with a woman making the first move.  But everytime?  Come on now.  Equality is the word here.

So with that in mind, I would like to offer up a remedy for guys who have either forgotten, or never learned how to "hunt."  See the one man show called "Defending the Caveman."  This has nothing to do with those Geico dudes that rolled a funny commercial into a thankfully short-lived TV show.

This is a one man show that will have both sexes laughing their asses off, and it points out the wonderful differences in all of us.  But it does bring us back to the true essence of who we are by the end of the night.  Rob Becker wrote the show over a three year period, during which he made an informal study of anthropology, psychology, sociology, and mythology.  Yeah, that sounds heady doesn't it?  Sometimes it's so on target for everyone in the audience that you'll see couples nudging each other.  I sat in back of a couple that I thought would have bruised ribs by the end of the show.  Plus they were quite vocal and I'd hear "oh, that is sooooo you" or  just "UH HUH" with zealous head-nodding during the play.

I took my son to see the show around his freshman year in High School.  Wait...I may have damaged him, so make sure that you take an age appropriate person to the show.  Preferably someone you are either married to, living with, or have been dating for a while.  Guys, get a caveman group together and go see it and laugh without shame.  Women, get your Bunko buddies together and get ready to be enlightened.  Who knows, maybe some of these groups will meet and hook- up after the show.

Defending the Caveman rolls into Portland's PCPA Dolores Winningstad Theatre on Friday, January 30th & Saturday January 31, 2009.  Tickets are $43 and available through Ticketmaster or at the PCPA Box Office.  It tends to sell out every time it comes to town, so I'm giving you an early warning on this.  Thanks to my friend Ivy Bauer for the Caveman production information!

Happy hunting....or gathering.
