Seriously, this A to Z thing is rockin'! I know I'm supposed to say that, being that I work for the station and all, but really, I can't believe how totally cool this is. I'm afraid to leave my desk because I don't want to miss a second of it. (I'm streaming it from my computer. Normally Gina has her radio on and we listen to 94/7 and I'm singing along to Pearl Jam when I should have my radio up louder and be belting out Petty, but then it becomes this who's-got-the-loudest-radio contest and my head explodes. I digress.)
I have a hard copy of the full A to Z list on my desk because I have to update the website each morning so you guys can see what we played, and people are calling the station this morning at 9am asking when we were going to have the list up. And I'm like, "Give me a few minutes, people! I gotta pull the album covers off of Google and cut and paste (remember the spelling errors?) the list from a text document into our website program and then put the times next to them! Can I get ten effing minutes, please?!"
But my job isn't nearly as intense as our jocks. If you've been listening at all, you will have noticed my favorite part of this whole thing--how Iris, Shannon and Marty have all these incredibly interesting tidbits of information about every single song! I'm learning all kinds of stuff about the history of each song and I'm wondering to myself, how the hell do they know all this stuff?
So I went into the studio and asked Iris and Shan that very question just a few minutes ago. "Research." replied Iris, and in her hands she has this piece of paper with all of her hand-written notes about Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain." She had a special interest in this one because we were just discussing last week the making of the Rumors album and all the band drama that went on behind the scenes. Side note- I just finished reading "Never Break the Chain, The Making of Rumors" by Cath someone that I borrowed from the KGON studio library.
But anyways- on Monday, Shan pops off all of this great information about Paul McCartney and Wings and their song "Another Day." He had all this amazing info on the recording of the song: when, where, the album it was on, who played on it, and most interesting, how Paul gave his wife, Linda, the writing credit for the song. Side note- that's interesting because the writing credit is where the most money is made by the artist, hence fighting amongst groups (like McCartney and Lennon, or Yoko) about who gets the credit. I asked Shan how he knew all of this and he asked me to cleverly disguise the fact that he uses Wikipedia. But I think it's probably a mix of Wikipedia and 900 years of being a radio DJ. I know Shan doesn't look super-busy in the picture above, but trust me, they are workin' their asses off in the studio.
Alas, just listen for yourself and learn. And enjoy. The music is amazing and the information takes it over the top.
